Cinemas in United Kingdom
The cinema remains a beloved family tradition across the UK, with chains and independents alike offering dedicated kids' screenings, autism-friendly showings, and bargain morning sessions during school holidays. Some venues go further with interactive screenings and themed events. We've gathered the best family-friendly cinemas with ratings and practical info.
Screen scale, recliner comfort, or cheap seats: how UK cinemas differ
This page lists 203 cinemas across the UK, 83 of them in London, though Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Bristol each have several. Among the most reviewed, the choice comes down to screen scale, seat comfort for a long film, and whether price or programming matters more.
For scale, BFI IMAX in London is the one a Best Cinemas in London for Kids and Families guide singles out for tweens, teens and movie-mad families. Reviewers say the rows are tight and centre seats make mid-film exits awkward, so it suits children who can sit through a full feature. Cineworld - Edinburgh has the only IMAX screen in that city plus 4DX, and Cineworld - Ashton-under-Lyne runs 4DX with water spray, wind and moving seats that our verdict pitches at children of about eight and up; sensory-sensitive kids are better on standard screens.
If comfort wins, recliners are the draw at ODEON Luxe Glasgow Quay, where outside food is allowed if it is not strongly scented, at ODEON Luxe Birmingham Broadway Plaza, and at Vue Cinema Manchester - Printworks, though that site no longer validates parking. The Light Stockport adds bowling, toddler screenings and hosted birthday parties, and Showcase Cinema de Lux Bluewater reclines every seat and runs Sunday sensory screenings.
On price and programme, Peckhamplex has a flat ticket price, no assigned seating, and Watch with Baby and autism-friendly sessions. BFI Southbank offers 25 and Under pricing, and the London Kids Cinema Guide lists a BFI Families matinee series with cheaper child tickets. Prince Charles Cinema is picked by the same London families guide for its personality, with sing-along screenings that sell out early. Genesis Cinema has ground-floor sofa seating for young children who need to shift about. Across the chains, the Family Cinema Guide notes Vue and Odeon weekend and school-holiday morning family screenings priced far below standard tickets, and says most chains admit babies free with a paying adult.
Before paying full price, check whether a chain's weekend or school-holiday morning family screening covers your film, and for IMAX confirm the title was actually shot in that format.
