Skating in United Kingdom
Ice rinks and roller skating venues across the UK offer brilliant family entertainment. With public skating sessions, learn-to-skate courses and holiday specials, it's a popular activity for children of all abilities.
Ice rink, roller rink or skatepark, and how much crowding you'll tolerate
The 67 places here split three ways. Most are ice rinks: full arenas such as National Ice Centre in Nottingham, Ice Sheffield, and Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre - Active Lambeth, whose Olympic-sized surface gives beginners more room and fewer collisions. Roller rinks are the cheaper, warmer alternative: Wigan Roller Rink is large enough that nervous first-timers are not crowded by faster skaters, Northwest Rollersports CIC in Manchester is praised for one-to-one attention with children aged 5 and up, and Roller Nation in London runs family sessions built around complete beginners. Skateparks are the third group: Projekts MCR Skatepark, a short walk from Piccadilly, coaches children from age 2 and runs Toddler Takeover sessions, while Southbank Skate Space is free to watch but has no equipment hire and belongs to advanced riders.
The next question is lessons versus a one-off outing. National Ice Centre has a Level 1 to 8 programme, Ice Sheffield's Learn to Skate is described as comprehensive with skate hire included in the session fee, and Romford Ice Rink pairs penguin aids with structured classes. For a seasonal treat, Somerset House has a floodlit historic courtyard; the guide Find the UK's best ice rinks for sparkling days out with kids puts it top of its London list, and mentions Skate Lates for teenagers, Chilled Sessions on weekday mornings, and lessons it says sell out fast. SnowDome in Tamworth is the outlier, offering snow year-round, though reviews report parking trouble on event nights.
Two frictions recur. Weekend crowding affects National Ice Centre, Romford and Alexandra Palace Ice Rink, with weekday sessions consistently quieter. Hire skate condition is a complaint at Bradford Ice Arena, Planet Ice Blackburn Arena and Telford Ice Rink & Soft Play. For easier logistics, Lee Valley Ice Centre and The Dome in Doncaster both have free parking.
If you own skates, bring them: several rinks report blunt or worn hire blades, and at Streatham it also lets you skip the hire queue.
