Swimming Pools in Central Scotland

Nine of the 17 pools here are in Glasgow itself, with the rest spread across Paisley, Bishopbriggs, East Kilbride, Renfrew and the city's outer estates. The real split is not geography but how confident your child is in the water, because a few of these pools are simply the wrong shape for a beginner.

For toddlers and nervous swimmers, look at shallow entry and warm water. Glasgow Club Pollok has a beach entry, with the deep end gated behind a lifeguard swim test. Dollan Aqua Centre in East Kilbride keeps its water very warm, and a free skatepark at the rear occupies older children on gala days when the main pool closes. Glasgow Club Easterhouse Pool offers a smaller pool and a river rapids feature, but reviewers repeatedly describe the pool and showers as cold. Glasgow Club Drumchapel Pool separates three pool areas so beginners never share with fitness swimmers, though it has no weekend sessions. The blog Our Favourite Fun Swimming Pools Around Glasgow calls Glasgow Club Gorbals the only council pool still with flume-style fun, with a beach entry leading into rapids and jacuzzi seats, and notes the flume only runs on weekends and in school holidays.

Older, confident swimmers have different options. Tollcross International Swimming Centre is 1.35m throughout with no shallow end, so its verdict is for children aged eight and up. Scotstoun Leisure centre combines swimming with badminton, gym and classes, but popular sessions need booking well ahead. Strathclyde Sport is far quieter at weekends than on student-heavy weekday evenings.

Two Victorian pools stand apart: The Western Baths Club, praised for baby classes and original swinging beams, and Renfrew Victory Baths, where school swimming classes share the pool. The Leisuredrome in Bishopbriggs pairs the pool with soft play and Saturday flume sessions. The same blog says the flume at Glasgow Club Bellahouston was removed after lockdown, and it carries the lowest rating on this list.
