Playgrounds in South West

Everything on this list is free, and the Bristol Mum guide makes the same point about the parks it covers. The real split is between purpose-built playgrounds and big parks where the play area is one stop among several. Blaise Castle Play Area in Henbury has two divided sections and a sandpit with a wooden boat, with the castle museum and woodland trails a short walk away; Bristol Mum describes its equipment as modern and suited to both older and younger children. Eastville Park pairs a sandpit playground with a river and lake circuit reviewers put at around 80 minutes, and Brandon Hill adds a sustained uphill walk to Cabot Tower that calls for comfortable shoes.

For siblings of different ages, fenced sites with separate zones make the easiest afternoon. Elm Park Public Playground in Filton keeps toddlers in a dog-free enclosure while older children get a zip line and trampoline. Emerson's Green Playground has two fenced areas, the zip line in the older one, and gets slippery after rain. Hengrove Play Park runs from toddler swings to a skate park but shade is sparse. Horfield Common Playground has artificial grass and a volunteer-run cafe on the common, though no roundabout or seesaw at present.

Adventure playgrounds are a different offer entirely. St Paul's Adventure Playground is for ages 8 to 16, with a treehouse, fire activities and dedicated SEND sessions on Saturday mornings. Felix Road Adventure Playground in Easton suits 5 to 8 year olds, has volunteers on hand and serves meals. In Worle, Castle batch all-inclusive SEND play area has wheelchair-accessible swings and roundabouts but no toilets or cafe.

Toilets are the recurring complaint across the list: Greville Smyth Park has permanently closed facilities, Redland Green Playground has none, and reviewers rate those at Victoria Park as poor.
