Zoos & Wildlife in Scotland

Three parks ask for a full day and a car. One guide calls it Scotland's second most visited attraction after Edinburgh Castle and the only place in the UK to see Queensland koalas. Blair Drummond Safari Park combines a drive-through, which one source says passes elephants, rhinos, lions and giraffes, with walking, animal talks and a sea lion show; its own site says tickets must be booked online and weekends and school holidays often sell out. Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig rewards cold days, when polar bears and big cats are markedly more active, though snow can close the drive-through section, and Edinburgh Zoo's site says one membership covers both RZSS parks.

Five Sisters Zoo in Polbeth and Auchingarrich Wildlife Park near Crieff sit in the middle. Five Sisters needs four hours or more, its site says no booking is required, and the Christmas illuminations do sell out. Auchingarrich has an indoor soft play barn that reviewers call a genuine wet-weather fallback, plus pram-friendly routes throughout; one source calls it small next to the bigger parks but with plenty to fill a day.

For the smallest children, Fife Zoo in Ladybank has a roughly 30-minute circuit where toddlers aged two to four can walk freely in clear sight, though older children will want a second activity nearby. Strathblane Falconry is a different thing entirely, a booked session with hands-on flying time, and the half-day option gives the most of it. Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is not a zoo but earns its place with free entry, signed green accessibility routes and winter light displays.
