Rock climbing centres for teenagers in London

Climbing gives teenagers something physical to work at, away from a screen. This guide covers six climbing centres across Greater London that set out what they run for young climbers. Choose by what your teen needs: a coached club, a beginner class they are old enough to join, or a wall where you can supervise them yourself.
HarroWall Climbing Centre
This indoor centre in Harrow has several routes in for teens. Its Junior Bouldering Club takes 7 to 17 year olds, and groups can be split into 7-10 and 11-17.
Other options include:
- Bouldering Basics, a beginner class for ages 14 and up that covers safety, warm-ups, movement and how to use the centre. No experience is needed.
- Termly courses following the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS), with groups split by age and award level.
- Private coaching for a group of up to six people, with a minimum age of seven.
There are gender-neutral changing cubicles, toilets, showers and accessible toilets.
The Font Climbing Hounslow
This is a 5,400 sq ft indoor bouldering facility with walls at varied angles. Under-18s can join a range of coached sessions, or climb with an experienced parent or guardian. Beginners aged 16 and over can book an Intro to Bouldering session to learn the basics.
Alongside the walls there is a fitness gym with free weights, cardio machines and fingerboards. A raised lounge and workspace looks out across the centre, and there is a cafe.
Yonder Indoor Climbing Gym
Yonder has eight climbing areas and a separate training space with weights and cardio equipment. Its coaching is set out by age:
- Yonder Squad: structured coaching twice a week, in groups for ages 8-11, 12-14 and 15-17.
- Crushers: a weekly class during the academic year for ages 7-15, working through a syllabus to build skills.
- Holiday clubs.
If you are bringing your child for the first time, you must book and complete a Family Induction, which includes a safety briefing and equipment. Under-18s must be supervised in the centre unless its supervision guidelines say otherwise.
The changing rooms are gender neutral with private cubicles, lockers and showers. The site also has a cafe, a bakery, a yoga studio and wheelchair access.
Romford Rock & Boulder
This is a small, independent gym in Romford. You do not need to book to climb, and there is no time limit on a session.
The supervision rules matter for teens here:
- Under-18s must be supervised by an adult who has also registered.
- One adult can supervise up to two under-18s.
- Climbers aged 14 to 17 may climb unsupervised only if they meet the gym's experience criteria.
Beginners can take a Bouldering Basics class to learn the basics and meet other climbers. There is a strength and conditioning gym at the back of the building, plus a cafe.
Climbing District | Tottenham Hale - Stronghold Climbing
This indoor centre in Tottenham Hale was formerly known as Stronghold. It runs a NICAS Bouldering Level 1 course, with groups for ages 7-9 and 11+. Classes are limited to six children, so places are few.
There is also a Family Climbing Induction, a group session led by an instructor that teaches parents how to supervise their children while climbing. Rental gear is included. The site has a co-working space as well as the climbing.
White Spider Climbing
This centre in Surbiton has both roped climbing and bouldering:
- 104 top-rope and lead climbing lines, with grades from 3 to 8b.
- 10 auto belays, each with at least four routes.
- Over 200 boulder problems, a training area and a digital training board, spread across two floors.
Qualified instructors can be booked for taster sessions and learn-to-climb coaching. Birthday parties for ages 7 and up mix top roping and bouldering, and you can reserve a table in the cafe afterwards for cake or lunch.
There are changing rooms, showers and a cafe serving coffee and food.
Before you go
- Paperwork: HarroWall asks you to pre-register online before a first visit. Climbing District needs its Kids Instructed Consent Form completed before a first session. Yonder requires a Family Induction before a child's first climb.
- Supervision: check each centre's rules for under-18s. Yonder and Romford Rock & Boulder both require adult supervision unless a teen meets their criteria, and The Font asks that an accompanying parent or guardian is experienced.
- Beginner class ages: HarroWall's Bouldering Basics starts at 14, and The Font's Intro to Bouldering at 16.
- Kit: climbing shoes can be hired at The Font. At Yonder, bring your own padlock and towel for the lockers and showers, as only a limited number of padlocks can be hired at the front desk.
- Getting there: Yonder is a short walk from Blackhorse Road station and has only two parking spaces, reserved for priority users. Romford Rock & Boulder and White Spider Climbing both have parking.
